Derek Smith has a balanced perspective of the law, built from practical experience from both sides of the courtroom. Early in his career, he achieved the rank of Senior Prosecuting Attorney in the Kent City Attorney’s Office. In 2002, Derek joined the Seattle City’s Attorney’s Office and worked in both the Criminal Division and as a Community Precinct Liaison with the Seattle Police Department Vice and Narcotics Unit. In 2011, Derek and James White founded The Law Offices of Smith and White, a defense firm located in downtown Tacoma.

As a Tacoma resident, Derek’s dedicated to solving our homeless and opioid crisis. He sees first-hand the effects it has on his clients at Smith & White and the cases he resides over as Judge Pro Tem. In support of our community, Derek, his family and business donate time and resources to multiple Tacoma non-profits including Sound Outreach, St. Marks Refugee Resettlement.
Derek and his wife Celesta have two sons, Rowan age 9 and Wyatt age 7. Rowan and Wyatt attend Sherman Elementary School where Celesta teaches mindfulness to the students. The family attends St. Marks Lutheran Church By The Narrows and Celesta is the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Coordinator.
